SLO- Ledger Nr. 71. CANDLES IN THE WATER

You need the following:

– A small candle

– A lighter or matches

– A shallow pot

– A glass

– Water

We pour water into a shallow pot and place a lit candle in it. Connect a glass over the burning candle. The candle goes out after a while and the water level in the glass increases.

When the candle in the glass burns, waste gases and heat are released. The candle goes out when oxygen is running out. When the gas mixture cools down, the pressure inside the jar decreases. Due to vacuum, water breaks into a glass and reduces the volume, so water rises. The process ends when the pressure inside the glass equals the outside pressure.
